External Mayhem, Inner Peace: The Art & Science of Cultivating Core Contentment in a Chaotic World
The law of maximum entropy rules the day. Systems left to their own will naturally fall to a state of disarray. The only thing we can count on is mayhem maliciously working its way into the most treasured and vulnerable elements of our lives. If this is what life is, how can we strategically cultivate a deep contentment that endures independent of our circumstances? Dr. Chuck outlines the art and science of cultivating an inner sense of joy and meaning that stands tall against all intruders, including suffering and death.
Doff and Don Resilience: A Mental Health Technique for Saving Careers and Lives
High levels of physician burnout have been compounded by the unprecedented challenges placed on people and systems by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. The ability of physicians to positively adapt to the current myriad of stressors is hindered by a longstanding and prevailing culture within the medical profession to "armor up and be perfect" as a lone wolf. While this rigid and isolating pattern of behavior may be beneficial in the competitive early stages of medical education and training, it is a direct cause of disengagement and burnout in a long clinical career that can only be sustained by an intentional commitment to flexibility and teamwork. In this presentation, Dr. Chuck recommends doffing old beliefs and habits that no longer serve us well, while donning a new approach to work built on the practice of daring greatly, telling the truth about experience, and working collaboratively with colleagues on mutually supportive teams. This "new and improved" modus operandi offers an evidence-based pathway for physicians to reconnect with their joy and meaning and re-engage in quality work with newfound enthusiasm.
Building a Culture of Wellness
Culture is the simmer sauce that permeates everything the people in an organization think and do. "It guides discretionary behavior . . . and tells us what to do when the CEO is not in the room" (Freis and Morriss). It lives at the intersection of logic and emotion. When combined with a strategic plan, servant leadership, and a critical mass of talent, culture is what drives engagement with the mission, a sense of belonging and trust, and pride in the organization. We explore the framework and drivers of a wellness strategy and identify the building blocks of culture that are palpable to the people doing the work.
Our Predicament & Its Resolution
A steady stream of pain, isolation, suffering, disability, and loss poses challenges to our pursuit of a life filled with joy (the inner hum of contentment associated with living on purpose) and meaning (the deep satisfaction of knowing that our existence matters, and that what we do makes a positive difference in the world and the lives of others). The resolution to this predicament lies in the adoption and regular practice of mindfulness, gratitude, enduring connections, and positive adaptation. Click here for details.
